PAC CREATES VOTER'S GUIDE

Earlier this year, the New Yorkers for Better Libraries Political Action Committee initiated a program of legislative accountability in which state legislators were graded on their support for initiatives of concern to libraries, including restoration of library aid cuts in the 2010-11 state budget, reduction of Public Library Construction Grants matching fund amounts in low-income areas and cooperative bidding for public libraries and library systems. Voting records and grades for all state legislators may be found online in the document, 2010 Voter’s Guide: The Library Advocate’s Guide to the Voting Records of the New York State Legislature. See how your legislators scored here.

FIRST STORYWALK HELD IN LOWVILLE

Over 50 people braved threatening clouds on Wednesday, June 9, to explore Lowville Free Library’s brand-new StorywalkTM project! The kickoff event was organized by Dawn Myers of Lowville Free Library and hosted by the Lowville office of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at their Forestry Demonstration Area on Rte. 812. Visitors were able to explore the beautiful arboretum while reading Karma Wilson’s picture book “A Frog in the Bog,” which is placed on stakes along a loop trail for families to read as they hike. Library and DEC staff were on hand to answer questions, and the event also featured nature-themed crafts, a fishing demonstration, and even a special guest appearance by Woodsy the Owl!
